Our next favourites are from Mt Eden Village Fish Shop which we've praised in these pages before. Recently, we ordered a couple of smoked fillets of terakihi, and a bag of chips, which were beautiful and golden; we took them home and scoffed with a rocket salad. The chips - half eaten before we left the village - were crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and piping hot - although they had been slightly too long in the deep fryer and were a little too brown. But they did come in a nice brown paper bag.

In terms of seafood, the most important rule is this: develop a relationship with your fishmonger. Recent Auckland research on fish shops showed us that fish and seafood is not quite as fresh as we thought it was. Hands down, the best place to buy fish in Auckland is the Mt Eden Village Fish Shop - it costs more but its worth it. Get your nose very close to seafood when you buy it - it is the best method to discern freshness - it should only smell of the sea.

This neighborhood fish shop excels in both freshness and presentation, offering an extensive selection of seafood year round. They will also oblige with catering sized orders. The owners here really care about their fish and seafood. But best of all, this shop has moved with the times and offers an outstanding selection of prepared products to take home - Manuka smoked fish cakes, Manuka smoked fish pie, Polynesian-style raw fish style salad, seafood salad, seafood chowder, fish stock, shellfish fritters and seafood skewers. They are well known for their quality fish and chips, with the fish cooked in a crispy beer batter alongside chunky-cut chips. They will also crumb or grill fish from the window to order.

No they’re not cheap but nor is good fish. At the Mt Eden Village Fish Shop the burnished beer batter is actually good, rather than just passable or, worse, gluggy and best discarded. What’s more, the fish is in primo condition and the fries are great and plentiful.

A short bike ride later I was at the counter of The Mount Eden Village FIsh Shop, now in the third generation of the Dean family. Fish is smoked on the premises. Their fish pies are sold frozen in foil packs. Pieces of fish are enormous. The batter is dark, gold and sweet. The chips are golden kidfingers. It comes wrapped togethor.....in faux newspaper.

The pieces of fish are enormous and succulent and the beer batter is dark gold and sweet. A little pricey, but the generous portions of chips make up for it. We like the faux-newspaper wrapping.

If it's too hot to light that barbecue, why not head over to the Mt Eden Village Fish Shop and buy a side of smoked fish for a salad? They smoke it impeccably themselves and have a good array of choices: snapper, trevally, tuna, and the salmon they are famous for, plus other varieties that come and go. Smoked fish is excellent with new potatoes, gherkins, capers, parsley, onion, rocket, tomatoes...toss them all together with mustard mayonnaise for a flame-free dinner.

Stephannie and Mario Dean make the best fish and chips in Auckland. Their chips are straight cut and large, the beer batter is light and everything is cooked in cottonseed oil. Every night the oil is filtered and the fryers are drained, scrubbed and cleaned. One of their secrets is to drain the fried food properly then wrap it carefully in two sheets of white newsprint and two sheets of newspaper. They don't waste time reading the newspaper while they're wrapping either because Stephanie and Mario believe in giving their customers the best - fresh fish, warm and not soggy. Mario rises at 5 am every day to buy the fish. They also sell fabulous quality wet fish and have a smoker out the back. They don't oversmoke the fish, so it is always tender and succulent.

The Mt Eden Village fish shop has been serving hungry locals (and those willing to travel for a good feed of fish 'n' chips) since the 1920s. The menu has all the usual suspects plus a few not so usual ones, like the addictive smoked garlic mussels. Food is cooked in cholestorol free cottonseed oil and coated in a light beer batter. While the prices at this family-owned chippie are a little higher than your corner fish 'n' chip shop, it's definately worth the extra! Don't forget to grab a couple of pots of their homemade aioli.....we think it's even better than Burger Fuel's.

Everyone needs a good fish shop. Fish shops don't normally smell good - this one does. Owners Mario and Steph do everything well - and sell the best fish and chips in town.

Mt Eden residents are blessed with the presence of the Mt Eden Village Fish Shop. A modern yet quaint establishment, it has been in the same family for three generations. Mario Dean's grandparents started the business when they migrated here last century from Croatia and his mother was pregnant with him as she worked on the deep fryer. Fish is smoked on the premises and the fishcakes are a heavenly mash of creamy potato and flakes of manuka-smoked salmon, snapper, tuna and trevally.

Stanley Dean's grandson, Mario must be a big hit in Podgora on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia: he's hot-smoking fish fillets and frying big-cut potato chips in their traditional fashion. The hot-smoked salmon fillet is absurdly good: buttery with a sour woody tang. You can take away some homemade tartare or aioli to have on your fish and chips which are fried in-store.

The famed Mt Eden Village fish shop is run by a third generation of Deans. You'll see revamped presentations, but they still smoke a great range of fish - salmon, trevally, snapper, tuna, kingfish, moonfish, hapuku, scallops, mussels and roe - the traditional Croatian way. There is a flaked mix for pies and fish and chips means tarakihi in beer batter.
